• Sony’s “Madame Web” will introduce multiple new Spider-Heroes in their live-action universe, including Cassandra Webb who can see the future using the Great Web of Life and Destiny.
  • Previous spider-related Marvel movies like “Venom,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and “Morbius” may have connections to “Madame Web” and are worth watching before the new film’s release.
  • The events of Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy and Andrew Garfield’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” films may be referenced in “Madame Web,” suggesting potential connections to those versions of Spider-Man.

Sony’s Madame Web is set to debut multiple new Spider-Verse heroes in their live-action universe. This includes Dakota’s Johnson’s Cassandra Webb who will unlock the ability to see the future across the Great Web of Life and Destiny. With that in mind, some previous spider-related Marvel movies may be worth watching before checking out the new film.

Coming from director S.J Clarkson, 2024’s Madame Web is also set to star Sydney Swenny as Julia Carpenter, Isabella Merced as Anya Corazon, and Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, a trio of young women set to become Spider-Heroes in a future seen by the titular Madame Web (Johnson) who unlocks her new power as a clairvoyant. However, this future is threatened by another wallcrawling individual known as Ezekiel Sims (Tahr Rahim). Having connections to major characters from the Spider-Man comics and the multiverse at large, here are 10 Marvel movies to watch before Madame Web’s release.

The character of Madame Web also appears in 11 episodes of Spider-Man: The Animated Series

How To Watch the Marvel Movies In Order (By Release Date & In Order Of MCU Timeline Events)

Want to catch up before the next release, or just revisit the universe for a refresher? Here’s the order to watch the entire MCU timeline.

10 Venom

Eddie Brock inside Venom in 2018's Venom

Starring Tom Hardy as both Eddie Brock and the voice of his symbiote, 2018’s Venom is the first confirmed live-action movie to be set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Featuring the origins of Marvel’s classic Lethal Protector, Venom could be an important watch due to its connections to the rest of the SSU which Madame Web is reportedly a part of. Considering Cassandra Webb’s ability to see multiple futures and realities across the multiverse in the comics and likely in the movie as well, Brock and his symbiote may be referenced.

9 Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom Carnage Cletus Kasady Villain

Venom: Let There Be Carnage naturally continues the story of Eddie Brock and Venom as they confront serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) and Venom’s offspring, Carnage. However, its post-credits scene also touches upon the multiverse and Venom’s ability to connect with a hivemind that spans across worlds and realities. As such, there could be a connection point between Venom’s abilities and Madame Web’s, perhaps via the Web of Life and Destiny.

8 Morbius

Jared Leto as Morbius snarling in vampire mode

While divisive, 2022’s Morbius revealed the origins of Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) and his transformation into a living vampire. Also set in the SSU, it’s quite possible that Madame Web could make references to the events of Morbius. It’s also possible that Madame Web could perhaps expand upon the confusing post-credits tease where Vulture and Morbius seemingly joined forces to go after Spider-Man, though the specific version of Spider-Man living in this universe has to be confirmed by Sony.

7 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Miles, Peter, and Gwen swing above NYC in promotional art for Spider-Man: Intro the Spider-Verse

The first animated Spider-Man movie set in the SSU and its greater Spider-Verse, the aptly titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced the concept of alternate Spider-Heroes beyond Peter Parker from other dimensions and realities such as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy’s Ghost Spider. While Madame Web’s collection of heroes seems to be from the same universe as Venom and Morbius in the SSU, Cassandra’s ability to see into the future via the Great Web could result in some interesting explorations or teases regarding other realities and threads that make up the Spider-Verse itself.

6 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

2023’s Across the Spider-Verse goes even deeper into the concepts of the multiverse with Miles Morales visiting other realities himself and interacting with countless different versions of Spider-Man. To that end, the movie also directly references and explains the Great Web of Life and Destiny. As such, it should prove interesting to see how the Great Web is explained in Madame Web in relation to Cassandra and how she’s able to perceive all of its different strands and threads.

Every Upcoming Marvel Movie: Full MCU Phase 5 & 6 List (& Beyond)

Between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, here is every upcoming Marvel movie release date and what we know about the projects so far.

5 Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man looks at his hands in awe in Spider-Man (2002)

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man could very well be an important film to watch before Madame Web. Starring Tobey Maguire, the events of the first movie take place in 2002. Interestingly enough, it’s been confirmed that the events of Madame Web will be taking place in 2003, around the same period as Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and its sequels. While it could be a coincidence, a connection to Maguire’s Wallcrawler may be revealed in the new movie.

4 Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man caught in Doc Ock's arms

The events of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 naturally continue the story of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man as he faces Doctor Octopus as well as faltering powers. To that end, it’s quite possible that the events of the sequel could be referenced in the upcoming Madame Web movie in some shape or form.

3 Spider-Man 3

Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 could also be referenced by Madame Web for the aforementioned reasons as the first two movies. Culminating the very first live-action Spider-Man trilogy, it would certainly be exciting if the new movie somehow makes reference to Spider-Man 3 or even this version of Peter Parker’s future going forward, one that was never seen after Sony canceled Raimi’s Spider-Man 4.

2 The Amazing Spider-Man

Gwen puts her hands on Peter's shoulders in The Amazing Spider-Man

Beyond Tobey Maguire, it’s also been rumored that Madame Web may reveal that the SSU is the same universe as Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man. Out of all the live-action Spider-Men introduced by Sony thus far, Garfield’s Spider-Man makes the most sense for the SSU, and that includes the incorporation of Venom and Morbius. As such, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man would certainly be worth the rematch with Madame Web’s being a potential prequel.

1 The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continues the story of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. As such, Madame Web could certainly reference the events of this movie as well considering Casandra’s ability to see various futures. At any rate, it should be very interesting to see what is and isn’t revealed about Sony’s Spider-Man Universe when Madame Web finally comes to theaters.

Sony’s Madame Web releases on February 14th, 2024.
