The Disney+ animated show is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and explores a new timeline on each episode, following what may have happened if different major turning points in the multimedia franchise had happened differently. The show is narrated by the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) and features many of the original Marvel stars reprising their roles, including Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Marvel Entertainment has now shared a first-look video revealing one of the storylines that is in store on What If…? season 3. Check it out below:

The clip opens on what seems to be a road trip where Buckey Barnes (also known as The Winter Soldier) and the Red Guardian are traveling together, though Bucky seems less than pleased to be there. However, the true nature of their predicament is revealed when they are investigated at a traffic stop, which leads to a high-octane car chase.

So far, What If…? is a show that has largely been interested in looking back through the storied history of the MCU. This has included season 1 going back to the Phase 1 MCU movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, to explore what would have happened if Peggy Carter had taken supersoldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. Other storylines in season 1 explored alternate visions of the earlier movies Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Thor, and Black Panther.

Is Marvel’s What If Canon? The Show’s MCU Connections Explained

With Marvel releasing its new Disney+ series What If…?, there’s a question of whether or not the series is canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Season 2, which aired two years later in December 2023, had a similarly backward-looking set of episodes, though they included a riff on the newer Phase 4 title Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It is currently unknown exactly how many returning and new characters will be part of the What If…? cast in season 3. However, this new clip implies that the next season of the show will be more forward-looking than previous seasons.

What If…? season 2 aired daily between December 22 and December 30, 2023.

By featuring The Winter Soldier and Red Guardian, What If…? is centering two of the characters who will be most prominent in the upcoming antihero movie Thunderbolts, which is due in theaters in July 2025. While it is unknown how many other episodes will feature similar teamups, this particular storyline feels much more like a direct tie-in with an upcoming Marvel property rather than an exploration of the universe as a whole. This could indicate a move toward keeping the animated show synchronized with the ongoing roster changes in the franchise.
