New Captain Marvel concept art reveals a boldly unique take on Carol Danvers’ MCU debut. This official but ultimately unused artwork presents an interesting take on Captain Marvel that takes clear inspiration from Carol Danvers’ background as a fighter pilot. Captain Marvel has already worn several diverse costumes during her handful of MCU appearances, but this new design is quite far from anything that made it to final production.

The MCU concept artwork was posted by artist Alexis Briclot on his Instagram page. His black, white, and yellow design for Captain Marvel was inspired by the Jolly Rogers, a Navy fighter pilot squadron established in the 1950s. Briclot also names Top Gun as an inspiration for Carol’s aviator appearance. The artwork also shows off two settings for Carol’s visor, suggesting that it could have been retractable like Star-Lord’s mask. Check out Briclot’s original Captain Marvel design below:

In an interview about The Marvels, Brie Larson revealed that Captain Marvel will return to the MCU at some point. While she couldn’t say which project, there are certain movies that seem well-suited for her next appearance. Either Avengers: Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars seems like a natural fit, as Captain Marvel is one of the strongest MCU heroes, and the team will likely need her help. Carol has also been established as a mentor for Kamala Khan, so she may also have a cameo in the Young Avengers project teased in The Marvels.
