Deadpool 3 is officially a part of the MCU, and it looks poised to prove its credentials by touching on the dark and tragic origin story of one of its main superheroes, which could give even Rocket Raccoon a run for his money. Deadpool 3 is set to be the only movie release for Marvel Studios in 2023, and will star a cavalcade of iconic Marvel cast members from Fox’s X-Men franchise. It can be assumed that multiversal shenanigans will lead to the arrival of these characters, which has been all but confirmed by Reynolds after he shared an image of the newest cast member who will portray an integral member of the Deadpool Corps.

In Marvel Comics, the Deadpool Corps is a team of alternate Deadpools that take many weird and wonderful guises reminiscent of the Spider-Man variants in Sony’s Spiderverse franchise, or Loki’s variants in the Void in Loki. These Deadpool variants include Kidpool, Headpool, and Pandapool, to name a few. It remains to be seen if the entirety of the Deadpool Corps will be appearing in Deadpool 3 (though it is unlikely given the presence of so many X-Men), but at least one of its most famous members, with one of the most tragic backstories, has been confirmed.

Deadpool 3’s Weirdest Character Has An Origin As Dark as Rocket Raccoon

Part of what made Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 so well-received was how it depicted the harrowing origins of Rocket Raccoon. As a victim of the High Evolutionary, Rocket was subject to torturous experiments that granted him sentience and cybernetic enhancements while growing up in a dank and cramped cage. The desperate situation was difficult to stomach, perfectly encapsulating the evil of the High Evolutionary while establishing the deep trauma that Rocket experienced early on in life.

The origin story of Dogpool, one of the most famous members of the Deadpool Corps, is just as dark. Earth-103173’s version of Deadpool was an average dog captured and tested on by that universe’s version of the Weapon X facility, Mascara X. The brutal cosmetic testing inflicted on Dogpool by the corporation is what led to his disfigurement. Upon being branded obsolete, Dogpool was then thrown out in a trash bag. After escaping the dumpster, Dogpool’s unsightly appearance spurred him to jump in front of a car after being spurned by passers-by.

Dogpool’s Comics Powers Explained

Dogpool from the Deadpool Corps Comics.

Thankfully, Dogpool survived the ordeal due to his spectacular regenerative healing factor, and was picked up by a traveling circus before then being taken in by the Deadpool Corps. This power came as a result of the regenerative mascara product that was being tested on him. As a result, Dogpool possesses the same powers as Deadpool from Earth-616. While this essentially means that Dogpool is as impervious as Deadpool, it does not make him immortal, as he was offed in the first issue of Deadpool Kills Deadpool. Whether Deadpool 3 will follow suit remains to be seen, but Dogpool has the opportunity to become an MCU fan-favorite otherwise.
