Wolverine will not be the only member of the Fox X-Men to return in Deadpool 3. With the Deadpool franchise being absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool will officially be ushering in elements of the Fox universe to the MCU. The MCU has already teased the movie through social media posts by stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The studio also released set photos featuring Wolverine in a comic-inspired costume while walking alongside his black and red-clad partner.
Recent set photos released by Mirror, however, reveal that one of Wolverine’s other enemies will be playing a role in the movie as well.
The pictures feature Wolverine in his costume while attacking a trench coat-clad Sabretooth. They are standing in a snowy forest, while a body lies in the background. Another photo features Deadpool holding a decapitated Sabretooth head by the hair. The Mirror‘s reporting also indicated that another X-Men villain, Toad, was seen on set, though they don’t appear in any of the snapped photos.
What Does The Return Of Sabretooth Mean For Deadpool 3
Sabretooth is among Wolverine’s best known enemies. He first appeared in the Fox universe in X-Men, where he was played by Tyler Mane. Liev Schreiber later portrayed the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the same movie where Deadpool first debuted. That version of Deadpool did not live long, however, and at the end of Deadpool 2, the Merc with a Mouth approaches that movie’s Deadpool variant and brutally kills him. Just as he shoots his own variant, Deadpool’s time-traveling shenanigans may play a role in the apparent death of Sabretooth.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead, the 2003 Daredevil‘s Elektra Natchios, and Vanessa Carlysle are also set to return for Deadpool 3.
Wolverine’s first on-screen battle with Sabretooth came in the original X-Men while they were fighting in a snowy forest, similar to the forest from these set photos. If Deadpool travels back to the original X-Men, he could very well meet Logan while he is defending Rogue from Sabretooth. That theory may not hold true, thought, as there is not nearly as much snow in this scene as compared to the original movie, but additional snow could always be added in through CGI.
Wolverine’s movie timeline is difficult to parse, which likely explains why Deadpool is exploring his history with Sabretooth. With Wolverine regularly struggling with amnesia, a time-traveling Deadpool is a natural partner for him, even if the Merc with a Mouth will surely irritate his fellow superhero. Regardless of the reasons behind it, Sabretooth’s return is sure to upset Wolverine in Deadpool 3.
