With many characters set to return for the upcoming threequel, Morena Baccarin is sharing some insight for Vanessa’s appearance in Deadpool 3. Baccarin starred in the first two installments of the X-Men spinoff franchise as the love interest for Ryan Reynolds’ titular Merc with a Mouth, serving as the catalyst for the first sequel’s plot as she’s killed and Wade grapples with her loss. The end of the sequel saw Wade using Cable’s time-travel device to stop Vanessa from being killed, leaving the door open for her return in the Deadpool 3 cast alongside fellow returning stars Reynolds, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney and Shioli Kustuna.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant for the crime thriller Fast Charlie, Baccarin was asked what she was looking forward to exploring in Deadpool 3. In addition to confirming that she had “finished” her work on the threequel, the actor teased that the movie would see Vanessa and Wade’s relationship reinvented while still ensuring that it would be “maintaining the core” of their dynamic in the movies and comics. Check out what Baccarin shared below:

I think it’s really cool that they are such well-met characters and that their lives… You can see them in and out of each other’s lives constantly. The comic, it’s the same way. So I think that the franchise and Ryan and the director, they’ve done a really great job of always reinventing that relationship and making it interesting, but maintaining the core thing that keeps them always coming back to each other. So I think there’s a little bit more of that in this film. My work is finished on the film.

Why Vanessa’s Return Is Key For Deadpool 3

From her introduction in the first movie, Vanessa quickly became a fan-favorite supporting character within the Deadpool universe. In addition to bringing her own sense of quick-witted humor and self-reliance, her relationship with Wade went a long way to showing a more vulnerable side to the Merc with a Mouth and making him a more well-rounded character than the joke machine audiences expected him to be. While there were some criticisms of fridging Vanessa in Deadpool 2, the original plan to see her break up with Wade was seen as a far inferior plan.

In addition to expanding on the unique dynamic between her and Wade, Vanessa’s return in Deadpool 3 invites the chance for her to become her super-powered comic book counterpart, Copycat. Franchise co-writer Rhett Reese previously teased this possibility after he and co-writer Paul Wernick, both of whom are returning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe-set threequel, elected to change the sequel’s ending to bring her back to life in favor of leaving her dead. Considering Deadpool 3 is expected to be a wild multiverse adventure featuring the returns of Hugh Jackman as a revived Wolverine as well as Jennifer Garner as Elektra, journeying to an alternate reality could see a Vanessa variant being Copycat.

Regardless of whether she becomes the mutant in the threequel, Deadpool 3 featuring Vanessa at least leaves the door open for this transformation to occur in the MCU’s future. It could also allow for a proper exploration of her and Wade’s desire to create a family together, a key theme from the 2018 sequel that led to the initial creation of X-Force. With Baccarin having already completed her filming on the movie, it remains unclear just how big of a role she’ll have in the threequel, but her return is likely to be an exciting one for fans of the first two Deadpool movies.
