  • The most potential for Maguire’s return lies in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars crossover in 2027.

A major Netflix data reveal proves the MCU needs Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. Directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Sony Pictures, the Spider-Man trilogy of the early 2000s remains incredibly iconic to this day. To that end, there’s so much more that could and should be done with Maguire’s Webslinger beyond his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home thanks to the multiverse.

The first of the big three live-action Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker received a full trilogy of films where he faced the likes of the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, The Sandman, Venom, and Harry Osborn’s Goblin. Hitting the perfect sweet spot between nostalgia and paying off further evolution audiences missed out on due to the cancelation of Spider-Man 4, it would certainly be exciting to see Maguire’s Spider-Man return after joining forces with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland’s versions of Spider-Man in No Way Home, especially after this big Netflix reveal.

He’s Still Loved 16 Years Later

Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in different moments across Sam Raimi's Trilogy

According to Netflix’s “What We Watched” report covering data from January-June of 2023, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy amassed 59,500,000 watch hours on Netflix in six months. Not only is that the highest number out of all three on-screen Spider-Men, it’s also quite surprising considering he and his movies are the oldest compared to the more recent movies starring Garfield and the MCU’s Tom Holland. All in all, it’s certainly a testament to the original Raimi-directed trilogy and the impact it had on pop culture and the superhero genre overall.

That being said, it certainly helps that 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home gave Maguire a chance to return and join forces with his fellow live-action versions of Spider-Man in the MCU. Largely seen as one of the most exciting moments post-Avengers: Endgame, it makes sense that Maguire’s return reignited interest in his trilogy of films on streamers like Netflix and Disney+. Furthermore, this data is also proof that Maguire needs to come back in the near future.

Where Could Tobey Maguire Return In The MCU

Avengers: Secret Wars Has The Most Potential

Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire), Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and Namor (Tenoch Huerta) line up for the final battle of Secret Wars

With both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures equally focused on telling multiverse stories, it’s likely only a matter of time before Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man returns to the big screen. To that end, the major Avengers: Secret Wars crossover set to release in 2027 does make the most sense, seeing as how multiple universes are expected to collide, likely requiring an alliance of heroes from multiple realities such as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine as well as Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men (and more). Regardless, this key Netflix data is strong and definite evidence that the MCU needs Maguire’s Spider-Man back in the near future.
