• There are rumors that Marvel is planning a new Thor movie that will have a more serious tone, possibly flipping the franchise’s light-hearted vibe.
  • Director Taika Waititi will not be returning for a potential Thor 5.
  • Thor’s future in the MCU may involve raising Love, finding a new path, and facing off against Hercules.

Marvel gets a new Thor in exciting 90’s Avengers fan art. Chris Hemsworth has played the God of Thunder in four Thor movies, another four Avengers films, and more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though his last solo movie as the hero was not universally beloved, reports indicate that Marvel is moving ahead with a new Thor 5 story that will flip the tone of the franchise from light-hearted to more serious. That possible new direction for Thor would have suited a specific actor if the MCU had started in the 90s.

On Instagram, @houseofmat started a series of Avengers fan art that imagined the members of the team played by 90s stars, and Dolph Lundgren was the chosen one to be the face of Thor.

Lundgren would have been an interesting choice for the role, with the actor also sharing the same imposing physique that Hemsworth brings to the character. Lundgren also has experience with Marvel in live-action, having played Frank Castle in 1989’s The Punisher, which makes his fan casting as Thor interesting. Perhaps through Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, the actor could appear in the MCU as either Thor or his version of The Punisher.

Taika Waititi Is Out For Thor 5

Thor with Thunderbolt in Thor Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder ended with Hemsworth’s character adopting Love, the daughter of Gorr the God Butcher. With a new Avengers team set to debut in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the Guardians of the Galaxy disbanding and Rocket leading a new iteration of the cosmic team, and Jane Foster dying in Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor is likely to be focused on raising Love and finding a new path for him in the MCU going forward. However, there is a past story thread hanging for Thor 5.

One of Thor: Love and Thunder‘s post-credits scenes saw the debut of Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein as Hercules. While in the comics, Hercules ends up becoming a member of the Avengers — which could happen in the MCU — the character is after Thor for almost killing Zeus, Hercules’ father, with his own Thunderbolt. Whatever story awaits Thor in a possible new solo movie will have to first see the God of Thunder go up against Hercules and work things out with the other hero.

Thor franchise director Taika Waititi confirmed he will not direct Thor 5. While the movie has not been officially confirmed by Marvel, Hemsworth previously talked to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about how a tonal change would be needed for him to return for Thor 5, saying, “I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone.” Waititi turned the Thor movies around by inserting a hearty dose of comedy, and his exit makes way for a more serious story like “Siege,” which could happen after the events of Secret Invasion, for the possible new Thor movie.
