The suspected timeline of Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four means that Johnny Storm’s MCU debut can finally resolve a major Easter egg hidden in Phase 1. Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn has been confirmed to be joining the MCU as Johnny Storm, the youngest member of the Fantastic Four, whose abilities include pyrokinesis and flight. Quinn will debut alongside Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Vanessa Kirby, with the latter playing his on-screen sister, Sue Storm. Not much is known about Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four reboot, but the project is expected to explore a seldom-seen period in the MCU’s history.

Johnny Storm will debut in the MCU’s Phase 6 alongside his Fantastic Four teammates, following years of scarce updates. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige announced the reboot in 2019, but even now that The Fantastic Four’s main cast is confirmed and a release date of July 25, 2025, has been set, not much is known about The Fantastic Four’s storyline. Nevertheless, the project is expected to be set in the 1960s, with The Fantastic Four’s first poster all but confirming its place in the MCU’s timeline, which means that connections can be made to other MCU characters operating during this period.

Johnny Storm’s Human Torch Name Was Inspired By One Of Marvel Comics’ Original Heroes

Among the Fantastic Four, Johnny dubs himself the Human Torch, taking inspiration from an original Marvel Comics hero.

Johnny Storm was first introduced into Marvel Comics in 1961’s Fantastic Four #1, bringing in a new age of reimagined and interconnected stories for the company. At 16-years-old, Johnny joined his older sister, Sue Storm, her fiancé, Reed Richards, and his friend, Ben Grimm, on a journey into space, where they were bombarded with cosmic radiation, which gifted them incredibly superhuman abilities. Johnny gains the power to control fire and transform his entire body into flames, which also enables him to fly. Among the Fantastic Four, Johnny dubs himself the Human Torch, taking inspiration from an original Marvel Comics hero.

Jim Hammond was the first superhero introduced in Marvel Comics back in 1939’s Marvel Comics#1. Dubbed the Human Torch, Hammond was an android created by Phineas Horton, a student of Kang the Conqueror variant Victor Timely, who possessed the ability to transform his body into fire and manipulate these flames. This Golden Age hero fell into obscurity in the 1950s and ’60s, despite being one of Marvel Comics’ signature heroes, but his moniker formed the inspiration for Johnny Storm’s Human Torch. Johnny chose the Human Torch name as a tribute to Jim Hammond, a well-known World War II-era superhero.

The Original Human Torch Has Already Appeared In The MCU

Jim Hammond’s Human Torch android hasn’t had a major MCU role, but the Marvel Comics hero did actually appear in the MCU’s Phase 1. During 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers take their dates to an exhibition of future technologies to see Howard Stark present a prototype flying car. Among the exhibits is a tube that contains a human-like figure sporting a red costume. This figure is actually Jim Hammond, though he is dubbed the “Synthetic Man” instead of the Human Torch, likely because the Human Torch’s film rights then resided with 20th Century Fox.

The Fantastic Four’s Timeline Can Pay Off The First Avenger’s Human Torch Tease

It’s possible that the Human Torch android could return to give more depth to Johnny Storm’s superhero name.

While the Synthetic Man’s appearance in The First Avenger was meant as an Easter egg for Marvel Comics fans, it’s possible that he could be referenced again in The Fantastic Four. The fact that Johnny Storm adopted the name of Human Torch as a tribute to this hero in Marvel Comics means that the same could be done in the MCU’s Phase 6, though the Human Torch android has never been seen in action, and his potential superhero career hasn’t been mentioned. It’s possible that the Human Torch android could return to give more depth to Johnny Storm’s superhero name.

In Marvel Comics, Reed Richards revealed that he named the Fantastic Four’s team members so that it would be easier for them to be seen as heroes, and achieve celebrity status, out of shame for his actions causing their initial transformation.

This could be even more possible because of The Fantastic Four’s suspected timeline, as setting the action in the 1960s means that several older superheroes can be referenced. This means that 1960s MCU characters could appear in The Fantastic Four, and suggests that The Fantastic Four will include more Easter eggs from Marvel Comics’ Golden Age. It will have only been 20 years since the events of The First Avenger during The Fantastic Four, meaning these new heroes will likely remember the exploits of Captain America and the original Human Torch, so several brilliant connections are sure to be established.
