Warning! This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2.

Summary

  • The Loki season 2 finale directors confirm that Ravonna Renslayer ends up in The Void, a desolate wasteland.
  • Without a way to escape, Renslayer is likely doomed to either death by Alioth or a life spent wandering the unending wasteland.
  • While it’s unlikely she will return in the MCU, the multiverse leaves open the possibility for another version of Renslayer to appear in the future.

The Loki season 2 finale closes the book on series antagonist Ravonna Renslayer, but the episode’s directors have spoken out to clarify exactly what happens to the menacing TVA judge. Loki season 2 episode 4 sees Renslayer pruned as she attempts a coup in the TVA, and the Loki season 2 finale confirms where she ends up in the MCU. Towards the end of the episode, Ravonna Renslayer is shown standing in a desolate wasteland that bears a striking resemblance to The Void from Loki season 1. However, the depiction of a weathered TVA seal and a lingering shot of a pyramid have caused confusion for some.

Fortunately, Loki season 2 finale directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have removed any doubt about where Ravonna ends up. Speaking to CinemaBlend, the pair had the following to say when asked to clear up Renslayer’s fate:

Justin Benson: “I think I’m gonna be able to say it’s The Void. She’s in The Void. … We like to think that The Void contains everything. Because everything on a long enough timeline gets pruned. And so, on an infinite timeline — because the TVA doesn’t exist. So we like to think that even that plate there, it just kind of expanded the mythology of The Void a little bit.”

Aaron Moorhead: “I wanted to say just a full on lie. Like, ‘She went back to the time of the dinosaurs. You didn’t catch it? Watch it again! There are dinosaurs in the background.’”

Moorhead’s joke aside, this does confirm that Renslayer is stuck in The Void. Without a TemPad or Ms. Minutes to help her leave, it doesn’t seem as though the villain will be able to escape, doomed to either death by Alioth (whose signature purple glow is reflected on Renslayer’s face) or a life spent wandering an unending wasteland.

Though Loki season 2 never shows Ravonna Renslayers’ death, it seems unlikely the one-time Kang ally will be seen again in the MCU. The last shot of Ravonna sees her face bathed in a purple glow, signaling the arrival of the immensely powerful Alioth, as seen in Loki season 1. It took the magic of several Loki’s to sneak past the beast, and Ravonna, having no powers or tech of her own, doesn’t seem likely to survive. Beyond that, her story has run its course, and bringing her back risks undoing what is ultimately a tragic story of anger and betrayal.

That being said, anything is possible in the MCU multiverse. Even if the version of Renslayer seen in Loki seasons 1 and 2 is dead, it’s always possible another version will show up from another timeline, perhaps aiding a different version of Kang as he attempts to conquer his variants. Either way, actor Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s engaging performance has helped make Ravonna Renslayer a wonderful secondary antagonist throughout Loki seasons 1 and 2.
