Who Are MCU’s Thunderbolts? Team Members, Origin & Comic History Explained

Marvel Studios is officially working on a Thunderbolts movie, with production to begin in 2023. Here’s all you need to know about the Thunderbolts!

Why Thunderbolts Is One Of The MCU’s Most Exciting Movies

While Thunderbolts focuses on a team that is not widely known, the MCU movie will unite several characters from past films and series, making Thunderbolts a major event film. It will be exciting to see just how characters like Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova interact after meeting for the first time, with Thunderbolts addressing a recent MCU criticism. Marvel has introduced many characters in the last couple of years, but they have not really interacted.

During the Infinity Saga, MCU characters would appear frequently, constantly interacting with other characters through solo and crossover movies. However, that has not happened yet in the Multiverse Saga, with many characters missing for years and very few heroes crossing over with others. The MCU has dealt with the criticism of feeling directionless, especially since the Multiverse Saga’s first Avengers movie will only come after two Phases have ended.

Based on that, Thunderbolts comes at the perfect time for the MCU. The movie will allow audiences to not only catch up with some fan-favorite characters but also see beloved relationships continue and new dynamics form. The debut of the new team could help fill the void left by the MCU not having a new Avengers movie until Avengers: The Kang Dynasty comes around. Adding to that, the Thunderbolts are a team of anti-heroes, which allows the MCU movie to get darker and more violent than it has in the past, presenting an exciting entry to the franchise with Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts releases on July 25, 2025.
