X-Men ’97 will take place sometime after the original X-Men: The Animated Series finale, following the death of Professor X. As the X-Men ’97 trailer reveals, the mutants are now trying to live on without their leader as the world continues to fear and discriminate against them. Even though Marvel Studios is producing X-Men ’97, it will not be set in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite the many nods that recent MCU movies and TV shows have paid towards X-Men: The Animated Series.

One of the big takeaways from the X-Men ’97 trailer is the reveal that Magneto was left as the inheritor of Charles Xavier’s will, which will obviously put the iconic mutant rival at an interesting place in the series. There is also the first look at Jean Grey’s pregnancy, with her and Scott Summers expecting their first child. X-Men ’97 season 1 is confirmed to consist of ten episodes, while the run time for each episode has yet to be revealed. The first series poster was also released, which can be seen below.

It’s remarkable to see how X-Men ’97 has managed to maintain most of the original show’s animation style while also feeling modern at the same time. It will also be intriguing to see how X-Men ’97 may explore other territories from the Marvel canon, as they are now under the Marvel Studios banner. But for now, the world can look forward to X-Men ’97 when it premieres on Disney+ on March 20.
