Robert Downey Jr. has commented on his career move from playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to having a key role in Oppenheimer. Downey started the MCU with 2008’s Iron Man, playing Tony Stark until the character sacrificed himself to save the universe in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Now that his time at Marvel has seemingly ended — with no upcoming MCU movies scheduled to feature the actor — RDJ has been commenting on his time as Iron Man.

At the 2024 BAFTAs (via DiscussingFilm), RDJ jokingly commented on his move from Iron Man in the MCU to joining Oppenheimer.

After a little over a decade as Iron Man in some of the MCU’s best movies, Downey Jr. is finding a different kind of success thanks to his role in director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, with the star racking up Best Supporting Actor awards. Downey joked about his time as Iron Man, saying Nolan’s Oppenheimer was “a last-ditch effort to resurrect [his] dwindling credibility” after his time making MCU movies.

Why Robert Downey Jr. Needs To Return As Iron Man 1 More Time

The MCU Will Need Tony Stark Soon

While RDJ is seeing exciting success in his new career path, the actor needs to return to the MCU as Iron Man for at least one more movie. Marvel Studios’ Phases 4 and 5 have found criticism so far due to several issues, with the absence of an Avengers movie being among them. However, that will soon change with the debut of two movies for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

While a new Avengers team should rise in 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, RDJ’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and the rest of the original Avengers have to come together for that film’s sequel. 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars will mark the end of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. As such, the film is expected to include several characters from all over the MCU’s history, as well as the wider multiverse of Marvel live-action movies and series.

There are rumors that Marvel is looking to reboot the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. If that turns out to be true, the movie could be the last chance for audiences to see Downey Jr.’s Iron Man again before a younger actor gets cast to play Tony Stark in the new version of the MCU. Having the hero who started it all there for the possible MCU’s possible finale would be the perfect send-off for the universe, allowing fans to see RDJ’s Iron Man interact with characters like Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and the MCU’s Fantastic Four.
