- What If…? season 2 will continue to explore alternative versions of MCU heroes and villains, including Ultron, Captain Carter, Thor, Gamora, Black Widow, and Doctor Strange.
- The season will introduce new stories, such as Peggy Carter battling her world’s Steve Rogers and a team-up between Tony Stark and Gamora.
- Disney+ and Marvel Studios have already renewed What If…? for a third season, indicating that the show’s story will continue to expand beyond season 2.
A What If…? fan poster imagines a different Avengers team for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, going up against the Ultron variant as their major antagonist. While the Multiverse Saga is primarily live-action, one of the big entries during Phase 4 was the animated Disney+ show, What If…?, based on the iconic anthology comic book series that taps into alternative realities where the MCU plays out differently. With the endless potential of the multiverse, What If…? season 2 will be continuing to explore other universes.
With several Phases 5 and 6 movies and TV shows coming up, The Multiverse Saga is far from over, and What If…? season 2 will be a crucial part of expanding the story. With What If…? season 2 coming up this December, Art of Time Travel brought the Guardians of the Multiverse to life in their live-action counterparts as they take on Infinity Ultron.
Aside from Ultron, the What If…? fan poster also features the live-action versions of Captain Carter, Thor, Gamora, Black Widow, and Doctor Strange, along with T’Challa as Star-Lord and Erik Stevens as Black Panther. The What If…? artwork also includes The Watcher and Ultron’s massive army, which can be seen in the background.
What We Know About What If…? Season 2
What If…? season 2 will introduce other alternative versions of MCU heroes and villains, specifically from Phase 4. The first episode is titled “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?” as Peggy will be forced to battle her world’s Steve Rogers. There will also be the introduction of an original character, Kahhori, exploring what would happen if the Tesseract arrived in the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy prior to America being colonized. What If…? season 2 will also feature a team-up episode between Tony Stark and Gamora, a return of Cate Blanchett’s Hela, and a story where Captain America actually beat Thanos.
The Disney+ animated series will also adapt elements of Neil Gaiman’s Marvel 1602, where superheroes were around as early as the Elizabethan era. Last but not least, What If…? season 2 is not the end for the show, as Disney+ and Marvel Studios have already renewed the series for season 3, as revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. No premiere date has been set yet, but presumably, the wait for What If…? season 3 won’t be too long after season 2, as the next season would likely have to arrive during Phase 6 before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
With the expansive resources that exist with animation, What If…? season 2 definitely has major expectations to meet as they get to explore the MCU in unique ways apart from Earth-199999. The bigger question is how What If…? season 2 ends, given that work is already being done on season 3, meaning the creative team is planning further along than expected. Hopefully, a What If…? season 2 trailer will be released soon to get the world ready for the new season.
