- New fan art showcases the potential line-up of the Thunderbolts team in the MCU, including Steven Yeun as the powerful superhero Sentry.
- Steven Yeun’s role in Thunderbolts hasn’t been officially confirmed, but The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman may have revealed that Yeun is playing the Sentry.
- The Sentry is a very powerful character in Marvel Comics, so his introduction in Thunderbolts could have significant implications for the MCU.
New MCU fan art depicts the first line-up of the titular team in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts going head-to-head with one powerful Marvel Comics superhero who’s been rumored to be appearing in Phase 6. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige officially announced the development of the MCU’s Thunderbolts project in July 2022, and announced the line-up of the team’s first iteration that September. Thunderbolts will forge Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, Wyatt Russell’s US Agent and Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster into a new MCU team, working under the watchful eye of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the Director of the MCU’s CIA.
The Walking Dead and Invincible star Steven Yeun joined the cast of Thunderbolts in February 2023, and though his role in the upcoming Phase 6 project hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel Studios, many suspect he’ll be portraying the MCU’s version of Robert Reynolds, a.k.a. the Sentry. This casting has now been imagined in fan art shared by Hazzaa Jarrar, which pits Yeun’s Sentry against the Thunderbolts team.
The art puts Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova front-and-center as the de facto leaders of the MCU’s Thunderbolts team, while Steven Yeun is depicted in a comic-accurate costume as the Sentry, an incredibly powerful superhero – and sometimes villain – in Marvel Comics.

Steven Yeun Hasn’t Been Confirmed As The MCU’s Sentry (Yet)
Despite being cast in Thunderbolts in February 2023, Steven Yeun’s role in the upcoming project hasn’t yet been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios. However, during a conversation with David Finch on November 17, 2023, The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman revealed that Steven Yeun had called him claiming to have come from a costume fitting for Sentry in Thunderbolts, seemingly confirming that Yeun would be portraying the superpowered character in the MCU. Marvel Studios hasn’t yet provided any comment on this development, so it’s possible this casting choice isn’t definite, but it seems as though months of fan-casting will come to fruition.
In Marvel Comics, Robert Reynolds’ Sentry is an incredibly powerful character, enhanced by an experimental super-soldier serum that gifted him the power of a million exploding suns. His dark alter ego, the Void, poses a major threat to the Marvel Universe, and many suspect this dichotomy is suspected to be explored with the Sentry’s potential debut in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts. Should Steven Yeun’s casting in Thunderbolts as Sentry turn out to be true, this could be setting up the actor for a long career in the MCU, as Sentry has previously been depicted as a close friend to many notable heroes and a prominent member of the Avengers.
