Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s What If…? Season 2, Episode 8

  • Captain Carter fights for a new MCU reality in the year 1602, despite its impending demise.
  • The Time Stone reveals that Steve Rogers caused the intermingling of realities with the 1602 timeline and the present.
  • The Watcher confirms he’s unable to see everything when a reality nears extinction, and Strange Supreme reunites with Carter by the episode’s end.

Marvel’s What If…? season 2, episode 8 ends with a hollow victory for Captain Carter in the year 1602. Having been time-displaced once again in the MCU multiverse, Peggy Carter was brought to a reality in which several MCU characters exist at the dawn of the 17th century rather than in the 21st. To that end, the episode’s ending saw Peggy refusing to give up until the day was saved while also setting up the season’s final episode.

As seen in Marvel’s What If…? season 2, events have been building towards a culminating event involving Strange Supreme and will now seemingly involve Captain Carter as well. Following her own episode where she battled a Steve Rogers brainwashed by the Red Room, Captain Carter has a leading role once more in “What If…The Avengers Assembled in 1602?” inspired by the Marvel 1602 comics by Neil Gaiman. As such, Captain Carter continues to fight for this new 1602 reality by the episode’s end, despite the Watcher’s belief that this universe was destined to die.

How To Watch the Marvel Movies In Order (By Release Date & In Order Of MCU Timeline Events)

Want to catch up before the next release, or just revisit the universe for a refresher? Here’s the order to watch the entire MCU timeline.

How Captain Carter Saved The MCU’s New 1602 Reality

Using The Time Stone To Find The “Forerunner”

Captain Carter in 1602

Having become an outlaw after failing to prevent the rifts endangering this new reality, Captain Carter becomes an outlaw as decreed by the new King Thor Odinson following the demise of Queen Hela, his sister. Having been brought to this reality thanks to the magic of 1602 Scarlet Witch, Peggy refused to give up despite the Watcher offering her a way back to her own time and reality in the multiverse. As such, Peggy teams up with a band of thieves led by this world’s Steve Rogers as well as Tony Stark whose eccentric genius had marked him as a madman.

Using Thor’s scepter and the Time Stone held within, Peggy used the stone’s power through a gauntlet fashioned by Stark to restore this reality with its 17th and 21st-century timelines having been intermingled.

Captain Carter Loses Another Steve Rogers

“We Never Get Our Happy Ending”

Described as “The Forerunner”, the Time Stone was able to identify the first being who instigated this intermingling of realities. As it happened, this being was Steve Rogers who cracked the Time Stone while fighting Thanos in Wakanda, sending him to 1602 as a drastically different confrontation compared to the one seen in the main MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War. Tragically, this means that Peggy had to sacrifice and say goodbye to yet another version of Steve Rogers.

Why All The 1602 Marvel Heroes Disappeared

It’s A Little Confusing

MCU 1602 Heroes Disappearing

Once Steve used Peggy’s new gauntlet to send himself back to his original time, it seemed as though he also sent back all the known MCU heroes operating in 1602 as well. While this would explain their apparent disappearance with Peggy being alone following the explosion of green light energy, it’s rather unclear.

The Watcher Reveals A Critical Multiverse Weakness

Universal Extinction Events Are Clouded For Uatu

It’s also worth noting that Uatu the Watcher continues to ask Captain Carter in this episode if she is ready to leave this damaged reality behind. This is because The Watcher admits he’s unable to see everything when reality is nearing its extinction, a critical weakness for the cosmic observer despite his constant claims that he’s all-seeing and all-knowing.

What Does Strange Supreme Have Planned For What If…? Season 2’s Finale?

Strange Supreme May Be Assembling New Guardians of the Multiverse

Strange Supreme in 1602 What If Season 2

Marvel’s What If…? ends much like the previous episode with a final shot of Strange Supreme. Having recently recruited the brand-new MCU hero Kahhori, it seems this darker Strange variant now has his sights on Captain Carter who was his former ally in the Guardians of the Multiverse featured in What If…? season 1’s finale. As such, perhaps Strange is looking to form a new team to face a rising threat to the multiverse, though it’s possible he could have darker motives that have yet to be revealed in Marvel’s What If…? season 2.
