Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for The Marvels.
Summary
- The Avengers are still active in the MCU, as hinted by Kamala Khan’s dream of joining the team and her comments about them.
- Many Avengers members are scattered, dead, or retired, which explains their absence since Endgame.
- The Marvels sets up Ms. Marvel as the future of the superhero group, possibly leading to her becoming an Avenger herself.
With The Marvels showing off the future direction of MCU hero team-ups, it begs the question of whether the Avengers are still active in the universe. In the big screen debut of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, the two follow the lead of Captain Marvel in order to investigate a Kree wormhole that is entangling their powers. The trio proves themselves to be a strong team both in terms of power and chemistry, reminiscent of some of the best Avengers team-up moments and The Marvels ending sets up future collaborations.
A big part of Kamala’s character is that she’s a huge fan of Captain Marvel, with Carol being the inspiration for her own hero persona. However, the other Avengers get a lot of love from the young hero as well. Ms. Marvel showed Kamala going to AvengerCon and her bedroom featured posters of heroes like Iron Man and Captain America. Though it’s been unsure whether the Avengers are even still active in the MCU, it would make sense that the ultimate goal for Ms. Marvel as a hero would be to become an Avenger herself.
The Avengers Are Still Active And Known In The MCU
Although many members of the Avengers have gone off to do their own thing since Avengers: Endgame, it seems like they are still active in the MCU. In Kamala’s narrated intro in The Marvels, she talks about her fantasy of teaming up with Captain Marvel. Her ideal scenario would end with Carol asking Kamala to hang out with the Avengers, officially making Ms. Marvel part of the team. Kamala talks about the team in The Marvels in the present tense, so it can be assumed that the Avengers are still active in the MCU.
The Avengers have seemingly been laying low so far in the Multiverse Saga, which is why their status has been put into question. However, they are clearly still a well-respected team judging by events like AvengerCon dedicated to them. Although The Marvels ends with Kamala looking to recruit for a young MCU superhero team of her own, that could just be a stepping stone for her journey to the main Avengers team and doesn’t mean the Avengers are completely gone.
The Avengers were also mentioned in episode 3 of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (2022).
Many Avengers Members Are Scattered, Dead Or Retired
There are some very obvious reasons as to why the Avengers haven’t been heard from since Endgame, and most of these reasons are beyond their control. Iron Man and Black Widow both died in Endgame, and Scarlet Witch has recently been confirmed dead from the events of Doctor Strange 2. Steve Rogers’ Captain America is clearly retired, and Spider-Man is wiped from the universe’s memory. Thor and Hulk have both been off-world, though that isn’t uncommon for them. Hawkeye and Doctor Strange are the two Avengers that have still been around, but it’ll take time for a new core Avengers team to form.
Though the Avengers team hasn’t been seen since the events of Avengers: Endgame, The Marvels seems to hint that they are very much still active. Based on Kamala Khan’s comments about the group and her dream of joining them, the Avengers are still around, albeit not at their peak activity. Considering most of the core Avengers have naturally parted ways, it makes sense that the hero team will need some time to regroup. The Avengers may not have played a role in The Marvels, but it’s paved the way for Ms. Marvel as the future of the superhero group.
