Summary
- Deadpool 3’s release date delay is a tolerable amount of time and it will now be the only MCU movie releasing in 2024, providing a critical moment of reprieve for both the MCU and its audience.
- With 50% of filming completed, there is still plenty of time for Deadpool 3 to wrap up production, and director Shawn Levy has already edited the completed half of the film.
- Deadpool 3 may not be as VFX-heavy as other MCU movies, leading to a potentially less labor-intensive post-production process.
With the SAG-AFTRA strikes now at an end, the film industry is resuming business as usual, and the inevitable delays on many projects mean Deadpool 3 is now the only MCU movie releasing in 2024. Deadpool’s first foray into the MCU will see him hopping across the multiverse, with his arrival stoking anticipation and rumors aplenty following the reveal that he will be accompanied by a yellow spandex-clad Wolverine. The movie was initially slated for release on May 3, 2024, but has been pushed back nearly three months to July 26, 2024.
Chief among the reasons for the Deadpool 3 release date delay is the fact that it still has to complete about 50% of the shooting. With that being said, a delay of just a couple of months is a tolerable amount of time – especially given the fact that Deadpool 3 will now be the only MCU release in 2024. With all that has been going on at Marvel, as detailed in the bombshell report by Variety, this could even be a critical moment of reprieve for both the MCU and its audience. As for why it will be the only release in 2024, the reason seems pretty plain.

With eight months to go until the new release date, there is still plenty of time for Deadpool 3 to wrap up the other half of shooting. The good news is that director Shawn Levy reportedly revealed that he has already edited the completed half of Deadpool 3, which will help edge it even further in the right direction. With Deadpool 3, which was always next up on the MCU release schedule, being halfway through principal photography, it should stand to reason that the other Phase 5 installments initially slated for 2024 releases must be in pretty rudimentary stages.
At this point, Thunderbolts and Blade have yet to begin principal photography.
The truth, however, is that Captain America: Brave New World wrapped up filming in late June, just hours before the SAG-AFTRA strike began. The studio has not, however, decided to emulate the release date switch-up of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania and The Marvels. This suggests that it must anticipate a pretty lengthy post-production process, something which Deadpool 3 is already halfway through. It also suggests that Deadpool 3 isn’t quite as heavy on the special effects.
Deadpool 3 May Not Be As VFX Heavy As Other MCU Movies
While there is still a large portion of shooting for Deadpool 3, it can be safely assumed that post-production won’t be as labor-intensive as that of Captain America: Brave New World. While there is practically a guarantee of some pretty epic battles, notably between Deadpool and Wolverine, few of the characters involved in the Deadpool franchise demand much in the way of CGI, except for Colossus. This is in stark contrast to the Hulk-adjacent characters appearing in Captain America: Brave New World, for instance, which include The Leader (and his potential Hulk army) and even Red Hulk.
While principal photography may have concluded on Captain America: Brave New World, there are still inevitable reshoots yet to occur. This is pretty standard practice for the MCU, though the results have been mixed in the past. Instead of being a bad sign for this movie, however, having such a large window in which to conduct these could be a good thing for the MCU as a whole.
Why It’s Good That Deadpool 3 Is The Only MCU Movie Releasing In 2024
Despite the obvious downside of receiving just a single cinematic release after so many years of being spoiled with two or three, the fact that Deadpool 3 will be the only MCU movie release in 2024 is a good thing, even as there continue to be TV releases. Keeping to such a prolific release schedule always risks rushed products, with one standout example in the MCU being She-Hulk, which was still being edited post-release. The most significant consequence of a significant delay, however, is the fact that each project has more time to cook, likely leading to a much more polished final product. A less obvious perk, however, is the breathing space.

Deadpool 3
- Release Date
- July 26, 2024
- Director
- Shawn Levy
- Cast
- Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Jennifer Garner
- prequel(s)
- Deadpool, Deadpool 2
- Franchise(s)
- Deadpool, Marvel Cinematic Universe
There are several reasons the MCU needs some reprieve. Superhero fatigue, stoked by a string of poorly received releases by both Marvel and DC, is at an all-time high and risks bursting the comic book bubble altogether. A little time for the dust to settle on the three cinematic and three streaming releases in 2023 should set Deadpool 3 and the following movies in good stead to reignite the passion for the franchise, especially with anticipation running so high for this Deadpool sequel in particular.
